Picking your picture editor
http://www.fashion.net/howto/fashionphotographer/

Photographer should know what the magazine does, and see how their work applies what the editors do and should know who the editor is called. Editors never really buy a image they see as they're looking for a photographer who can complete future commissions. To grab attention from an editor is to show their previous published work.

A photograph is a document like an article and picture editors that look for images have clear communication or emotion. For example a celebrity portrait should reveal phases of the subjects character that links with the written profile. If work speaks clearly then picture and photographer will stand out and a chance with picture editors. There's an over-supply of photographer that magazines take advantage. some magazines have a descent budget, but a lot of magazines just cover expenses and don't pay time.

When submitting work to picture editors by calling up the magazine  to get name of person who's submission should be marked such as labeling photographers name and telephone number and stamped self-address envelope if wanting work back. Some clients take advantage that there are loads of photographer out there and make them pay for whole shoot, they alter pictures but don't tell photographer when they have dropped the story so they disrespectful toward the photographer.

http://www.steves-digicams.com/knowledge-center/how-tos/photography-tips/how-to-become-an-editorial-photographer.html

An editorial Photographer's succes is clear by their talent, originality and the reputation they have built in the industry. Their employability revolves around whether they can work within a deadline, negotiate well, follow promises and deliver strong work in a short amount of time. If the photographer is willing to hire an assistant photographer to the team, the assistant's pay will be low, the tasks will be tested on their skills and desire to become an editorial photographer. Editorial work is the time required on front and back end of assignment. Research, emails, phone calls, packing, travel, image processing and uploading digital files consume time and those hours are often unpaid because work is considered to be included in the fee.Editorial photographer may offer lots of creative freedom and the opportunity to have work displaced in a national publication such as Reebok will offer a pay check that will be equivalent to more than a week of shooting for their national magazine.  The reality if it photographer finds their image on Shutter stock or Press wire, its going to be difficult to make any money licensing their work.  If photographers images that few other professionals are creating like if the subject is rare or the way of shooting is rare they will mostly have a market to themselves. Photographers will usually find that they are competing with a model that is already licensing pictures that are making a few thousands per image.  In this job photographers will go through many projects quickly in a few days. In each assignment they much understand the story then add depth and clarity to its message providing visual image. Editorial photography has always been a glamorous and dreaming career, to sell work it is the focus of the months column.

Editorial work does not pay as well as commercial but editorial you get more creative and imaginative and get a credit line. Photographers usually do editorial work to add to their portfolio then show portfolio to commercial work. If you do fashion images for a few hundred thousands they would add this to their portfolio and show their pictures to potential commercial clients and if impressed and join their team and shoot that is when you make real money.

Editorial Photography
Book: Michael Grecco, Lighting and the dramatic portrait, the art of celebrity and editorial photography, Amphato book

Collaboration and storytelling go hand and hand, it is important that the audience to know who the subject is and what the subject does. Not every image can be a storyteller, it can strive to make images idea driven. When shooting a model for an assignment is the concept of the subjects personality or previous work, the subject isn't the most important part of the image, just using models face or personality to enhance the products story. Sets can be a tool to tell a story to set the mood, without having to travel around the world.

Fashion Photography
book: Face of fashion, Susan Bright

The fashion system have particular strands of creativity within it that repay close examination. Portraiture is one such strand. Over generations great photographers have taken studio photographs for the purpose of illustrating newly fashionable lines of clothing, make-up or hair-styling within fashion magazines and newspaper supplements. In some shots subjects nakedness stands for 'the ghosts of absent clothes'. A great photographer is everything. It's not enough to have an amazing face and innovative clothes. Photographers need vision to pull image together and tell a story. Fashion is said to be a passing moment. A photograph is capturing that moment and a compelling image lives forever.

Louis Vuitton fashion works may be the hippest and coolest personalities of 1960s London, but stripped of any context they lack emotion, empathy and authority. The models become simply graphic icons of any age. His work of the 1970 and 1980 has divided viewers on whether his representations of women are empowering or exploitative.

What is the difference between fashion and editorial photography?

Fashion Photography
Garments are just an accessory to convey a certain lifestyle. Therefore, the whole image is much more complex. Fashion photographers don’t usually see plain white or off-white backgrounds in fashion photography and the models are usually styled very dramatically with thick eyeliners, dramatic eye shadows. With the increased styling of make-up also comes an increased in lighting to make the image look more dramatic. Photographers doing a fashion shoot some may have used up to seven lights to get the dramatic look. This does not mean that a dramatic look cannot be achieved with only one light, such as an octabank or light reflector dish, it’s about the effect of the lighting and not about how many lights photographers use to get that specific effect. Fashion is one of the most vibrant and exciting areas of professional photography. Though only a few top photographers live up to the glamorous image of exotic locations and beautiful models, there is continuous demand across the industry for uniqueness and innovation. Photographers who understand fashion trends and can deliver striking images that sell the look and style of the clothes are much in demand and can command substantial fees. It is the Fashion Photographer's job not only to photograph garments but also to interpret the basic ideas and associations suggested by the season, the range of clothes, the designer or the design brand. Fashion Photographers work in studios and on location to produce imaginative and eye-catching photographs that illustrate and advertise clothes, accessories and lifestyle. They need to understand each client's brand image and be able to work closely with other creative people to fulfil the brief. Fashion Photographers usually work in busy studios, and must have sufficient experience and composure to operate effectively under pressure.

Editorial Photography
Editorial photography is very similar to fashion photography as editorial photography is usually not about selling a product. In fashion photography it’s the lifestyle, in editorial photography it’s the story or the theme of the shoot. As with fashion photography, the proper lighting is of utter importance. For example a photographer is shooting an editorial piece about a girl traveling but is about joy and happiness, photographer will need friendly lighting if the story is about the joy and the happiness, you would of course use very friendly and exposed lighting to highlight this mood. If the story is about the dangers of traveling, the lighting would be much more dramatic. An editorial photographer provides images for magazines, newspapers, books and websites. The most importance between editorial and fashion photography is that editorial work is published with text, such as a story or caption. The work should complement and present an idea from the story in a visual manner. Editorial photography can be fashion, food, architecture, still- life or photojournalism, depending on area of interest the photographer could focus on their photo shooting on sports photography. An editorial photographer shoots on location and in studio depending on the assignment, they hire cast and crew and have location permits.
To become an editorial photographer, high photographic skills and a deep understanding of the tools for the job are necessary. It is essential to build a strong, smart and well thought out portfolio that will serve as your pick up where you left off.  Fine art photographer or a photo journalist shoots photos for editorial use. They can shoot photos of anything they want in a public setting (that is open for all to see an intended to be seen) and use it in photo fine art, as references for submit to a magazine or newspaper for a news story.
